Signs of Thyroid Issues

Your thyroid hormones regulate virtually every metabolic process in your body. In fact, almost every cell in your body has receptor sites for thyroid hormones.

How do you know if you have a thyroid condition?

First, be aware of any symptoms that might signal thyroid concerns.

Here is a list of the most common signs of thyroid issues:


  • fatigue (even with a good night’s sleep)
  • constipation and hard stools
  • increased sensitivity to cold
  • dry skin and hair
  • unexplained weight gain
  • depression and low mood
  • hair loss or thinning
  • muscle aches, tenderness or stiffness
  • muscle weakness
  • hoarseness
  • puffy face
  • heavier than normal menses or irregular periods
  • impaired memory
  • brain fog
  • infertility and miscarriage
  • thinning outer eyebrow
  • elevated cholesterol levels
  • slowed heart rate

Second, ensure the proper testing is done to identify the exact nature of the thyroid imbalances.

Conventional medicine often fails patients with thyroid concerns. 90% of the patients that come to my office with thyroid imbalances have been told they have “normal” blood work results.

I routinely test a complete thyroid panel on every patient. This includes tests that look for antibodies to the thyroid that indicate an autoimmune component may be present, such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis.

The thyroid never breaks down in isolation.

Most often, it’s a victim of other factors interfering with its function. These factors include poor diet, high stress, inflammation, infection, liver dysfunction and gastrointestinal conditions, to name just a few.

The thyroid relies on the healthy functioning of other organs like the liver, gastrointestinal system, pituitary gland and adrenal glands. That’s why it’s essential to use a comprehensive strategy that looks at the bigger picture.

For example, when a person is under chronic stress, the body responds by prioritizing the systems focused on survival – the adrenals, which are responsible for our fight-or-flight response. The functions of the thyroid – metabolism, body temperature regulation – are secondary to survival. So the body puts those on hold. Otherwise it would like having two people driving the same car.

Unfortunately, adrenal insufficiency, is a too often overlooked cause of thyroid imbalances.

Find a doctor who will work closely with you and evaluate the necessary markers to accurately assess the state of your thyroid, including other causative factors like adrenal fatigue. Only after a comprehensive assessment can you put together a personalized treatment plan that address the root causes of your health condition.
