Gaining Weight? Not Sleeping? The Top 3 Lab Tests You Need Today

Do you feel like you’re doing everything right and you’re still gaining weight?

You’re not sleeping, you may have horrible PMS or low libido… perhaps you’re bloated… exhausted most of the time.

People often seek out Naturopathic medicine when they are frustrated. When they’ve tried everything else but nothing else has worked – at least for the long term.

The above description is common. I see patients every day in my practice giving me a similar description when I ask them how I can help them.

So that’s why I want to share with you the top three lab tests that most positively impact people’s health. Functional lab tests that only holistic, integrative doctors like myself are doing.

One of my patients, a 36 year old woman who works in finance, is the perfect example.

She was doing five boot-camp and spin classes a week, working long hours, falling into bed exhausted then tossing and turning all night, her periods were becoming weirdly irregular and she was feeling bloated all the time.

She never would have gone to her regular primary care doctor for any of these problems. Would you? She knew a 10 minute visit and a prescription for a sleeping pill wasn’t the ultimate answer.

She needed expert advice that would take a holistic look at her life, her diet, her medical history and her symptoms, and help her get to the root of the problem.

So she booked an appointment at Wellness Blueprint Health Centre and during her initial intake I realized we needed to do more than the usual basic blood work to understand why she was feeling so badly.

First we did a Wellness Blueprint baseline profile which includes far more blood tests than a regular doctor looks at. Through the analysis of her blood test results we discovered congestion in her liver, a tendency towards reactive hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and nutrient deficiencies like vitamin B12 and magnesium.

From there we did a urinary hormone test and learned that her high nighttime cortisol was what was keeping her awake at night.

We also did a comprehensive stool analysis – yup a 3-day poop sample! Not as bad as it sounds and it was key to discovering she had dysbiosis (an imbalance in her gut microbes) and low digestive function.

Finally we did an organic acids test that told us that her detoxification pathways needed support and that she was slow at making neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin. So we were able to give her targeted supplements to help support her body based on her results.

Now each of these specialized tests has an extra lab fee – but at the Wellness Blueprint Health Centre we work hard with our lab partners to keep those fees down. And for my patient the knowledge she gained was invaluable. How worth it is it to get test results that set you up preventatively for life versus a couple extra dinners out that make you feel bloated and exhausted anyway?

For my patient, we were able to use medical grade natural supplements (NOT the stuff at the grocery store) that helped her balance cortisol and estrogen, improve protein absorption with enzymes, resolve dysbiosis through probiotics and replete nutrients she was deficient in.

I also guided her through an elimination diet that helped her identify food sensitivities and prescribed an natural anti-fungal protocol that killed off the yeast overgrowth in her gut.

For my patient the testing helped us guide her care in a targeted way and now she is sleeping, her menstrual cycles are regular, her PMS is gone, her digestion is working wonderfully and she lost 10 lbs without struggle.

Here are the top three lab tests that I’ve found most positively impact a patient’s health, that only holistic doctors like myself are doing:

1. Dried Urine Test for Comprehensive Hormones (dutch)

This test is one you do at home on an average day for you. It requires that you urinate on filter paper four times in the same day – when you wake up, two hours after waking, before dinner and before bed. It gives us a curve of your cortisol over the course of the day, along with all the other hormones including estrogen, progesterone, testosterone and melatonin. Cortisol should start high in the morning, when you need that get up and go and come down over the course of the day. If this pattern is off for you, your cortisol could be the reason you have weight gain, high blood pressure, sugar imbalances and hormone imbalances. Recent studies have proven the value in carrying out this type of test.

2. Comprehensive Stool Test

This test reveals imbalances in the good and bad bacteria in your gut, identifies the overgrowth of yeasts and finds parasites. It also tells us if you have inflammation in your digestive tract and if your digestive juices in your pancreas are low, meaning you are not absorbing nutrients as well. For people with digestive and autoimmune problems, this test is a life changer.

3. Organic Acid Testing

Organic acid testing is ideal for someone who suffers from weight issues, sleep abnormalities, depression, chemical sensitivities and autoimmune conditions. Here is a list of just some of the insights it can provide:

  • Functional vitamin and mineral status
  • Amino acid insufficiencies like carnitine and NAC
  • Oxidative damage and antioxidant need
  • Phase I & Phase II detoxification capacity
  • Functional B-complex vitamin need
  • Neurotransmitter metabolites
  • Mitochondrial energy production
  • Methylation sufficiency
  • Lipoic acid and CoQ10 status
  • Markers for bacterial and yeast overgrowth

The bottom line: Don’t go it alone. Work with a Naturopathic doctor and health care team who are experts in interpreting your in depth test results, and giving you comprehensive medical and lifestyle advice that will help you solve your health issues in a way your primary care doctor can’t.
